CORE COMPETENCY

A decade ago ‘Core Competency’ was a common buzzword in our industry. It went hand in hand with the basic concept of ISO – Do What You Say and Say What You Do. Sad to say during the roller coaster ride of recent years many organizations have tried to become the one stop answer for all their customers or have downsized and maintained only their profitable operations.

It comes down to what we heard as kids, ‘You can only do one thing well at a time.’ But, people rarely change and once again our industry sees a significant part of its members trying to do most everything. There are some who believe most customers want a ‘one stop shop’ for all their needs. Like a Walmart, but for our industry. The reality is there are too many variables for one company to do everything.

It seems odd that if professional sports teams have specialists that anybody in our industry would remotely consider operating beyond their core competency.
